The Friends of Penick Village, Inc. was founded in 1986 with the mission statement “To Support, To Assist, To Affirm Penick Village.” Friends was established as an ecumenical organization which endeavors to enrich the lives of Penick Village residents. The first meeting was called to order February 28, 1986 by President Patsy Bonsal. Today the membership stands at twenty-two community members who volunteer their time and efforts to Penick Village.

Throughout the following years, many requests have been answered to provide for the needs of residents, the latest is the automatic door which has been installed at the end of “C Wing” in South Building. We have also sponsored large fund raisers such as The Friends of Penick Village Golf Tournament at Forest Creek Golf Club in October, 2004 which raised over $50,000 to buy a wheelchair accessible van for Penick. We depend on a fall membership drive to supply a wide variety of on-campus needs. We have planted bulbs- some 1,500 of them –and provided medical equipment, bought two golf carts, a large TV, many outdoor benches, and provided out-of-town bus trips to destinations over the East Coast, as well as the state of North Carolina.

We have four meetings and host four parties a year. We prepare our prettiest sandwiches and most delicious cookies so that the residents can enjoy a bit of “party” food. Each board member brings a small gift to be given to those lucky winners of the door prize drawing. There is usually some form of musical entertainment and everybody has a good time.

The Friends of Penick Village invites YOU to join us in what we consider to be a rewarding ministry. Please contact President, Lucie Saylor at (910) 949-9983 or at friendsofpenick@penickvillage.org
