S.P. Business Association Names Winner in Christmas Tree Contest
AS PRINTED IN THE PILOT
The Southern Pines Business Association's downtown Parade of Christmas Trees program culminated Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Train Depot with its annual tree-lighting event.
A record number of 55 trees were sponsored for this year's event, according to Greg Zywocinski, director of Christmas and holiday events for the association.
Sponsors included downtown merchants, local businesses and a group of individuals, including Mayor Frank Quis and Town Manager Reagan Parsons, who sponsored nonprofit organizations that otherwise might not have been able to participate in the program.
The trees were judged on the day of the tree-lighting ceremony, and seven awards were presented.
The HealthCare Management tree won first prize. Second prize went to the Wine Cellar and Tasting Room, and third prize went to Penick Village. Honorable mention awards were given to A Wild Hare, Prudential Gouger, O'Neal and Saunders, and McDonald's of Aberdeen.
The grand prize winner for Best in Show was awarded to Prancing Horse Center, a nonprofit organization specializing in therapeutic massage. Jarrett Deerwester of Stover Homes was the sponsor for their tree. Zywocinski said that judging the trees was a difficult task.
"There were so many beautifully decorated trees that it was hard to narrow it down to just seven," he said. "I don't know if we can top this next year, but we'll try!"
The Southern Pines Business Association, along with the town of Southern Pines, also sponsors the annual Holiday Parade, which takes place in downtown Southern Pines at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15.
