Helen Stephens retired on Friday August 22, 2008 as a Residential Housekeeper at Penick Village in Southern Pines. She dedicated 30 years of service assisting the household needs of the residents. A retirement party in her honor was hosted by the staff in the South Lounge with many residents and board members in attendance.

Mrs. Stephens is from Aberdeen and is the mother of four children, Edna Stephens, Cynthia Stringfield, Sylvia Grooms, and Darryl Stephens. A co-worker, Linda Johnson stated, “Helen is a caring, compassionate, and loving lady, and her work is a true ministry to the residents. She is passionate about God, church and her family, making her job here at Penick Village a natural fit.”

Heartfelt words were shared by several residents who became very fond of Helen throughout the years. Current resident Flo Viverette stated, “As a housekeeper, you are the foundation of the house, and that is what Helen means to me.”

When Helen was asked, “What are you going to do now that you are retired?” She stated, “First, take a little time to rest. Then go to the beach with my family. What I am most looking forward to doing is local mission work and continuing to serve God.”

Penick Village is the Episcopal Retirement Community of the Diocese of North Carolina.
