Penick Village Honors Dr. Wallace at Board of Director’s Meeting
Penick Village celebrated Donald K. Wallace, M.D and his recent retirement by honoring him at their June 27, 2008 Board of Director’s meeting. The meeting began with an opening prayer offered by W. Kirby Kilpatrick, M.D., President of the Penick Village Board of Directors asking for continued blessings on Dr. Wallace, his family and his work that he has done and continues to do. Dr. Kilpatrick motioned a resolution to the Penick Village Board of Directors to use this Board Meeting to honor Dr. Wallace for his gracious care he gave to the residents at Penick Village while serving as Penick Village’s Medical Director during the years 1988 to 2004, which was unanimously received by the Board.
One of Penick Village’s long-time residents, Patricia Rosenthal, a former patient, spoke with great gratitude about Dr. Wallace’s work at Penick Village during his 16 years as Medical Director. “Dr. Wallace is a man with great vision, passion, and love for his work. He was the ‘House Doctor’ on call and here for us whenever for who ever needed him. He always had time to listen and showed great love to his patients,” said Ms. Rosenthal. She further explained how in addition to patient care that Dr. Wallace has another vision for the continued expansion of geriatric care through the creation of the Donald K. Wallace Endowment for Adult Nurse Practitioners, an independent endowment administered through the Foundation of FirstHealth.
Jeff Hutchins, Chief Executive Officer stated, “Dr. Wallace was always faithful to meeting the needs of the residents. He received phone calls 24 hours a day. He was always there when we needed him. He truly made Penick Village a better place. He led our quality assurance team throughout his time with us and he improved the quality of services to the residents through his vast knowledge of elder care. We are sad to see him retire but we are thrilled for his opportunity to go and play. Even in his retirement he is helping others by creating the Donald K. Wallace Endowment for Adult Nurse Practitioners. His foresight to meet the needs of the upcoming generation is deeply appreciated. Dr. Wallace, thank you for all you have done for the Penick Village family and we are blessed that you are part of it.”
In recognition of Dr. Wallace Penick Village is making a $2,500.00 contribution in his honor to his endowment which will fund scholarships for nurses wanting to pursue a degree in geriatrics. Dr. Wallace explained how the medical field is loosing primary care physicians to specialty practices other than geriatrics due to the overwhelming cost of medical school and how this shortage of geriatric doctors is not only a problem in Moore County but a national problem as well. Dr. Wallace said that he established this endowment fund with FirstHealth to increase nursing support to the limited number of geriatric doctors. “Nurses can do eighty percent of what doctors can do so this will help,” stated Dr. Wallace.
Dr. Wallace asked the Board of Directors if they knew what Penick Village’s admission policy was in 1965 when he first came here. “When a patient was admitted here if the patient spent down their Medicare funds Penick Village would keep them no matter what their financial change was,” said Dr. Wallace. “Because of that I felt that this was the best nursing facility in the area. I appreciate what Penick Village has done for me and the mission they continue to do. Thank you very much for this honor and the donation to the endowment fund.”
