GE Healthcare Provides Volunteer Service to Penick Village

GE Healthcare is the medical systems division of General Electric, most commonly known for its expertise in hospital and healthcare devices such as CT, X-Ray, MRI, mammography and ultrasound machines.

On Wednesday, April 23, five GE representatives provided a community benefit service to Penick Village residents. Volunteers provided routine maintenance such as tightening screws, oiling parts, and cleaning residents' mobility devices such as wheel chairs, walkers, and scooters.

This is the second year that GE has provided this light maintenance service to a Sandhills area continuing care facility.

“This service has been wonderful and I appreciate it,” said resident Flora Neely. Even though the residents were thankful and appreciative of this free service, they were most impressed with the entertainment provided while they waited to be served.

Bill Joyner, one of the employees at GE Healthcare, was not only volunteering his time to provide maintenance on residents' equipment, but also entertaining the residents through his music. Joyner, who is from Fayetteville, and whose mother lives at Penick Village, is a member of the local musical group Joyner, Young, and Marie. He brought his guitar and played a variety of styles of music from bluegrass tunes to Elvis songs. The group is often featured at the May Street Market in downtown Southern Pines.

"We at Penick Village are very grateful for all that these men did for the residents," said Aaron Dye, life enrichment director. "Not only did they meet an important need by servicing their wheel chairs and walkers, but they also warmed their hearts through the blessing of music and laughter."

Penick Village is the Episcopal Retirement Community of the Diocese of North Carolina. For more information about programs and volunteer opportunities at Penick Village, contact Aaron Dye at (910) 692-0344.
