‘Life Experience’ Items Highlight Auction

BY ANNE COOK: SPECIAL TO THE PILOT

Art as well as adventure will highlight the Art Show Preview Party at Penick Village on Friday, February 27th.

Featured in this year’s auction are chances to bid on spending “A Day in the Life” with such diverse talents as an excavator/archeologist on Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge, to a day at the Bethpage Black on Long Island with a behind-the-scenes visit to the 2009 Men’s U.S. Open Golf Championship.

Have you ever wondered if you have the intestinal fortitude of George H.W. Bush? If so, you can bid on the ultimate thrill, skydiving with an Army Golden Knight. Even if you elect not to jump, you can take a lesson “skydiving” indoors at the Paraclete Jump Center in Raeford.

Or you could choose to enjoy a cozy day of baking with Master Pastry Chef, Martin Bruener, at The Bakehouse in Aberdeen and come home with secrets of the trade.

There has always been a fascination with medical shows as entertainment: think of “House” or “Grey’s Anatomy”. Now is your chance to go behind-the-scenes and into the O.R. with Dr. Ray Washington of Pinehurst Surgical. What an opportunity!

Experience the pace and pulse of women’s professional golf with a day behind-the-scenes at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship at Saucon Valley in Bethlehem, PA.

Perhaps car racing is your passion. A non-stop, high velocity behind-the-scenes day at the 2009 NASCAR Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte could be yours. Zoom – Zoom.

Get your children involved in “living” history and learn more about the fierce pirate, Blackbeard. His notorious flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, is being excavated off the N.C. coast and here’s a chance to buy a tour for up to 8 kids and 2 adults to experience this colorful era in N.C. maritime history.

What about “A Day in the Life” at WRAL. Have you ever wondered about broadcast news and how a program is put together as deadlines approach? Engaging news personality, David Crabtree, is putting together this package.

“A Day in the Life” personalized tour of Old Salem with two authors Aurelia Eller and Paula Locklear plus an autographed copy of their book will highlight four new museums which have opened in the last three years. This should be a great way to learn more about the Moravian community.

A cooking class and festive dinner afterwards for 10 – 12 at Rubicon Farm will be hosted by Elizabeth Norfleet, author of The Seasonal Palette and An Appetite for Art. Rubicon Farm, on the National Registry of Historic Places, is located in Eastwood near Pinehurst and should provide a fabulous evening.

These are but a few of the life experiences and other packages that will be available at the Preview Party as well as paintings, pottery, photography and jewelry.

Executive Chef, Scott Margolis has not yet finalized his selection of hors d’oeuvres, but I do know that he has chosen sweet corn soup with roasted red pepper foam as the soup. Two other selections will be beef tenderloin bruschetta with mango and brown butter and carved blood orange roasted pork loin with sauces. The Preview Party will take place Friday, February 27th from 6:30 – 9:30 pm in the North Building of Penick Village on East Rhode Island Avenue Extension. Admission is $45 per person and includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction providing those present with the opportunity to purchase the artwork prior to general admission. Valet parking is available.

Saturday, February 28th the Art Show & Sale at Penick Village will be open from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm and Sunday, March 1st from noon to 3:00 pm. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. The show will feature artwork from a variety of talented area artists for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the Penick Village Benevolent Assistance Fund.
